Girls basketball: West Haven upsets Shelton
The West Haven High girls basketball snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 39-35 victory over visiting Shelton High on Monday night in an SCC interdivision matchup.
The Westies, who won for just the second time this season, pulled the upset by holding the Gaelettes without a field goal over the final 2:56 of the fourth quarter.
During that span, Lauren Lewis knocked down 4-of-4 from the foul line, helping West Haven (2-11) hold on down the stretch.
Shelton’s only point over the final three minutes came on a Casey O’Connor free throw with 37 seconds left. That whittled the Gaelette deficit to 37-35, but Lewis provided the final scoreline by knocking down a brace of foul shots with 26 seconds remaining.
Jaymesha Sanders led West Haven with 11 points, Marianna Kalander and Kaitlynn Cooke added eight and Lewis chipped in with seven.
O’Connor had 12 points to pace Shelton and Nicole Roberts had eight, as the Gaelettes fell to 8-4 overall.
Shelton led 13-8 after the opening frame, behind four points apiece from O’Connor and Roberts. West Haven sliced the Gaelettes’ advantage to 21-19 at the half, with Cooke pouring in all eight of her points in the second quarter.
The second half was a tug-of-war, with West Haven taking its first lead on Diamond Dixon’s baseline jumper 4:10 left in the third quarter.
After Shelton went ahead on an O’Connor free throw, the Westies regained the lead on Kalander’s layup with 5:44 left to play and kept Shelton at bay the rest of the way.
