Girls volleyball: Shelton falls to Southington in states
The Shelton Gaelettes fell to host Southington High in the second round of the Class LL girls volleyball tournament, 3-1 (27-25, 17-25, 25-17, 25-21), on Thursday night.
After surrendering a lead in the first set, No. 10 Shelton (16-6) roared back to win the second set. The No. 7 Blue Knights (16-3) then took the final two sets to move onto the quarterfinals opposite No. 2 Amity (18-1) in Saturday.
“I’m very proud of the way they played,” said Shelton coach LeAnne Bianchine. “They leave it all on the court and that’s really all that matters. They’re diehard kids.They’ve given me everything for four years. I have nothing but love for my kids.”
Senior captain Mackenzie Burns led the Gaelettes with 17 digs and 14 kills.
Classmate and captain Samantha Stevens had 19 digs and nine kills.
Senior Grace Tokarski had 21 assists and 10 digs.
Carly Nicholas had 12 digs.
Senior Morgan Raymond led the Blue Knights with 18 kills and 11 digs.
Nolyn Allen added 13 digs. Stephanie Zera had 20 assists.
