Lampert, Brakettes extend winning streak
The Stratford Brakettes navigated through another long weekend of games without a blemish, as they picked up seven more wins over four days.
The hometown favorites started the action with a quick trip to Rhode Island on Thursday night to take on an All-Star team filled with top collegiate talent in an exhibition.
Allyson Fournier struck out 18 batters and the Brakettes defeated the Planet Fastpitch All-Stars, 1-0, at RIC Field in Providence.
Cassie Ruscz made a successful Brakette debut, as she singled to right field on the first pitch she saw in the top of the second. Ruscz scored the game’s only run later that inning on an RBI groundout by Amber Radomski.
Fournier made that run count and was never threatened in the seven-inning decision.
The Brakettes returned home to DeLuca Field for a three-night homestand starting Friday, as they swept a twinbill from the New York Swag, 6-0 and 18-0.
The Brakettes exploded for 13 runs in the fourth inning of the second game.
Tatum Buckley struck out 14 in the opener to earn her second win as a Brakette, while Brandice Balschmiter struck out 10 and threw a one-hitter in the nightcap.
Elena Bowman hit her first home run as a Brakette in the late game, while Mariel Schlaefer hit her fourth long ball of the year.
Elise Fortier also clobbered a grand slam in the contest, which gave her a team-leading nine homers.
Stratford took a doubleheader from the New York Swag Red on Saturday evening, 3-0 and 13-0, again riding dominant pitching performances to victory.
Balschmiter struck out 11 and scattered three hits in the early matchup, while Fournier fanned nine and hurled a two-hitter in the second game.
Denise Denis broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning of game one, driving in two runs with a double. She later scored the Brakettes’ third and final run on a single by Fortier.
Denis continued her hot hitting in the late contest with her seventh homer of the year. Fortier also smacked her fourth grand slam of the year (10th home run), while Bri Chiusano hit her first home run as a Brakette.
Britt Lampert went 4-for-4 in the second game and scored three runs.
The Brakettes finished off the weekend with an 8-0, 21-0 sweep of the CT Xplosion 23U on Sunday night, as Buckley and Fournier struck out nine apiece to earn the wins.
Radomski hit her third homer in the first game and Chiusano drilled her second long ball.
The Brakettes followed with four homers in the second contest, with Jess Mouse hitting her first of the year.
Buckley added her second homer, a grand slam, in the 15-run second inning. Schlaefer crushed two more homers in the game, giving her six on the year.
The Brakettes improved to 21-0 with the perfect week, as Fournier pushed her mark to 11-0. Baschmiter now stands at 7-0, while Buckley is 3-0 on the season. The Brakettes return to action Thursday night, July 3, at 7 with a doubleheader against the Stratford Breakers 23U.
