Mia Chen, Joseph Giovannini top scholar athletes for fall season

Mia Chen and Joseph Giovannini are Shelton High’s Southern Connecticut Conference Fall Scholar Athletes.

The SCC Scholar Athlete program is sponsored by Great Blue Research and recognizes student athletes who have a minimum of a B (3.0 grade point average) overall and have earned a varsity letter. Student athletes also demonstrate leadership qualities by being a positive role model both on and off the field and show commitment to self-improvement and put their team before themselves.

Mia Chen

Chen is ranked 3rd in a class of 275 with a 4.748 grade point average. She is a four-year girls soccer player and four-time letter-winner in indoor and outdoor track, where she is a team captain.

Executive officer of the National Honor Society, Chen is a Student Council member, and has received a National Merit Scholarship Letter of Commendation.

A Columbia Book Award recipient, she is an AP Scholar with Honor, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and a member of the SCC All-Academic team.

Chen is a Support For Covid Classrooms volunteer, a Go Girls World Cup camp counselor, and a Leaders United for a Change tutor.

“Mia exemplifies the best values of our program,” girls soccer coach Marvin Miller said. “She is fearless and plays with a passion that reinforces the pride, spirit and commitment to excellence that identifies Shelton girls’ soccer. Mia is an excellent leader and role model for us all.”

Joseph Giovannini

A high Honor Roll student all four years, Giovannini is ranked 7th in his class of 275. His GPA is 4.525

Giovannini is a four-year member of the cross country and outdoor track teams.

A member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, he is a Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony University of Rochester Scholarship Award winner.

For eight years, Giovannini has volunteered with Making Strides for Breast Cancer. He is Editor in Chief for Gael Magazine and an Al’s Angels Meal Bin Assembly volunteer. Student of the Month all four years, Giovannini is American Legion CT Boys’ State.

"Joe has been one of the most dedicated and hard-working athletes that I have ever coached,” said Mike Gambardella, Shelton boys’ cross country coach. “He has been a valuable member of the team for the past four years, earning varsity status for the past two seasons. Joe is well respected by his teammates and always leads by example. He has always been a pleasure to coach and be associated with.”
