Second season to bear fruit for Aspetuck

The second season for the Aspetuck Girls Rugby Club is shaping up to be an exciting one according to coach Kally Keesler.

“We have girls from all over the area: Shelton, New Canaan, Wallingford, Newtown, Fairfield, and even New York,” she said. “We have girls with a great deal of experience as well as newcomers. All of them are talented athletes who are willing to work hard to raise the level of play.”

The inaugural season in 2021 saw Aspetuck, which plays out of Newtown, put a senior-less team on the pitch. It was led by a handful of sophomores and juniors.

“We are looking forward this season to playing not only in the Connecticut League, but in the newly formed Elite Girls Rugby League,” Keesler said. “The EGRL is built on the premise of improving the quality of rugby, increasing rugby IQ, while spreading the passion and culture of rugby.”

A highlight for the locals came last June when the locals went 2-1 at the Mid-Atlantic Women’s Rugby Showcase in New Jersey.

Jayden Smith scored two in a 38-10 victory over Doylestown, the Pennsylvania champions. Reese Smith, Ella Venables, Andria Hamilton and Jocelyn Riley had one goal each.

Jennie Weiner, Ashley Torres-Brown and Avery Laird led the scoring in a 26-12 loss to Morris.

Torres-Brown scored three tries while Riley had one when Aspetuck defeated Play Rugby.

“The girls want to share their love of the game while increasing female representation for the sport,” Keesler said. “I am thrilled to be working with these amazing young athletes. I anticipate a challenging and thrilling season.”
