Versatility is a necessity for the Shelton boys’ swim team.

“For a small team we have a surprising amount of depth,” coach Tom Jurzynski said of his 11-man roster. “We have five or six we rotate in on to swim our top relays. Many of the guys are interchangeable depending on where else we need them.”

Being short rostered hurt the Gaels in their last meet, a 93-71 loss to Lyman Hall-Coginchaug.

“It was tough because we had a few guys out,” Jurzynski said after his team dropped to 2-5. “We swam well. We ran out of guys and then out of points.”

Jai Goel, a four-year starter, and first-year swimmer Matthew Marty are the lone seniors.

“Jai is a sprint freestyler and also does well in the 100-butterfly,” Jurzynski said of his team captain. “I can put him in any event. Jai’s filled in at breaststroke and distance freestyle as well. He gives us a good swim in any event.

“Ryan Ouloul is our top backstroker,” he added. “Ryan has swum the 100 back in every meet and had his best time (1:06, 1:07) against Lyman Hall.”

Goel and Ben Rhodes, a junior, lead the 100-butterfly. Rhodes also swims relays.

There is depth in one event.

Jurzynski said: “A lot of our kids are good in meets in the 100-breaststroke. It is our team’s best event. We can’t put them all in at the same time, so we move guys around.”

Jason Kim, Charlie Mozdzer, Jack Parkes and Silviou Raducan swim the breaststroke.

“Jason is a good 100 breaststroker and 100-freestyler. He has had a big drop in times,” Jurzynski said. “Charlie and Jack are freestylers and swim the breaststroke. Silviou is a first-year swimmer as a junior. He has taken to the 100-breaststroke well and has helped us in that event.

“Jan Vincent Caccam does the 100 freestyle and fills in at backstroke and breaststroke. He has taken time off his swims all year. He does a nice job wherever we put him.

“Shane Colligan is a freshman. We put him in the 200 IM or the 100 fly or 100-back. Ireneusz Koziul is our distance swimmer in the 500-freestyle. He helps us out as well on relays. It’s a close-knit group. They like racing each other in practice. We have four dual meets left. SCC’s will come up quick (March 3), but we still have time to improve.” Twitter: @blox354
