Softball: Shelton teams up to make states

The Shelton softball team defeated Hamden, 17-7, on Saturday to earn a berth in the state tournament.

The Gaelettes won five of its last six games to finish 8-10.

The bottom half of the batting order led the charge, driving in nine runs, scoring 11 and registering 10 hits.

“We haven’t made the state tournament in three years and we were destined to make it,” said Shelton coach Joann Desrochers. “The seniors haven’t made it since they were freshmen, so they really wanted to make it.”

Senior pitcher Alexis Calhoun led the way, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored and finished a home run shy of the cycle.

MacKenzie Bures and Bryana Heuser each finished 3-for-5 each with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Lillian Rivera went 1-for-5 with two RBIs.

Alexis Belco went 1-for-2 with three walks and scored four runs.

Leadoff hitter Samantha Woods went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and three stolen bases.

Kayla Resto was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

Arianna Berardi and Brittney Stott each had a sac fly.

Maggie Carlucci went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two walks, a stolen base and a sac fly.

“That was unusual for us,” Desrochers said. “Usually the bottom of the lineup doesn’t score as much so I was really pleased to see that. I don’t think they felt any pressure so they came through.”
