Track and field stars heading to Nationals
Six Shelton High School students are on their way to North Carolina for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals.
The event is held for elite track and field athletes across the United States of America.
Senior Lauren Oaks qualified for the javelin with a throw of 108 feet on March 29 at the O’Grady Relays in Danbury. She received the gold medal in the event that day.
Junior Samantha Stevens qualified in the discus throw at the same meet with a throw of 132 feet. Stevens also received the gold medal in the event. This will be her second year competing at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals.
The boys 800-meter sprint medley relay team qualified for Nationals at the same O’Grady Relays. Their time of 1:35.28 won them the gold medal, broke the school record and set a new overall meet record. Jostin Cobb, senior, runs the first 100-meter leg of the race. He passes the baton to Camerin Gumbs, a freshman, for the next 100 meters. The baton is then passed to senior Tyler Hansen to run the 200-meter leg. Luke English, a junior, anchors the team with a 400-meter run.
Although Shelton High School is proud of the students’ accomplishments, their policy on athletic funding outside of the normal high school season leaves them unable to aid the students in costs to attend and participate in their events.
Each athlete must pay a registration fee, as well as for room and board, travel expenses, and food. A Go Fund Me account is being set up in hopes that the Shelton community will support and assist in some of the costs to attend this elite track meet.
