WNBA champions and UConn legends Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird will share the cover of this year's edition of NBA 2K23. The game will release on Sept. 9.

The long-running video game franchise unveiled its "WNBA Edition" cover last year with Chicago Sky's Candace Parker. NBA 2K20 was the first edition of the game to feature women's professional basketball.

"It really is an incredible feeling to see your hard work memorialized on the cover of a game like NBA 2K23," Taurasi said in a release. "There are so many kids that dream of pursuing a professional basketball career, and they can now also dream of being on the NBA 2K cover, whether they want to play in the NBA or WNBA."

Joining Taurasi and Bird will be Michael Jordan, who will be featured on two special editions of the game — NBA 2K23: The Michael Jordan Edition and the Championship Edition. The game's cover star and list of platforms will be revealed on Thursday, when pre-orders for the game will begin, according to gaming website Polygon

The dynamic between Taurasi and Bird started back during their collegiate days at UConn when the two were on the same team for the 2002 NCAA National Championship. Between the two, UConn racked up four National Championships between 2000 and 2004.

On their own, the two former teammates have a combined seven WNBA National Championships and been recognized 23 times as WNBA All-Stars. Additionally, both athletes are five-time Olympic gold medalists under the tutelage of some of the most famous women's basketball coaches, including their former UConn coach Geno Auriemma.

Last month, Bird announced her retirement from WNBA after the 2022 season.
