World No. 1, defending champ Dustin Johnson headlines Travelers field

The Travelers Championship was going to be hard-pressed to match last year’s field: Nine of the top 10 players in the world rankings competed.

Travelers was the third tournament back in the PGA Tour’s return from a three-month sabbatical during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Everyone wanted to get back out on the course.

But those golfers didn’t have any spectators to play in front of. They will this year as five of the world’s top 10 will be teeing it up at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell beginning Thursday, including world No. 1 Dustin Johnson, the defending champion.

“We are in a good spot. We’re glad the guys like playing here and we love having them here,” Travelers Championship tournament director Nathan Grube said.

Tickets are still available for both the courtyard and general admission, except for Sunday, which is sold out. All tickets must be purchased in advance.

Joining Johnson from the top 10 are Bryson DeChambeau (No. 5), Patrick Cantlay (No. 7), Patrick Reed (No. 8) and Brooks Koepka (No. 10).

Also in the field are Tony Finau (No. 14), Daniel Berger (No. 16), Scottie Scheffler (No. 17), Paul Casey (No. 19) and Abraham Ancer (No. 21), Joaquin Niemann (31) and Matt Wolff (32).

“We can’t ask for a better endorsement from a player. ‘That’s a great tournament. You should go there.’ That keeps happening,” Grube said.

Other notables and fan-favorites include: Phil Mickelson (30th), who became the oldest player to win a major championship when he won the PGA in May at 50; former U.S. Open champ Justin Rose (42), former Masters champion Adam Scott (43), his first appearance at the Travelers since 2010, three-time Travelers champion Bubba Watson (61) and Rickie Fowler (88), making his first appearance in the tournament since 2013, and former Travelers Championship winners Marc Leishman, Stewart Cink and Kevin Streelman.

Grube said Scott, Scheffler, Berger and Francesco Molinari, the 2018 Open Championship winner, all committed to play in the last few days. The two remaining sponsor’s exemptions went to 2006 winner and Fairfield native J.J. Henry and Nick Watney.

Chase Koepka, John Pak, Davis Thompson and Austin Eckroat received sponsor’s exemptions earlier in the week. There will be four Monday qualifiers completing the 156-player field.
