The Shelton High football team gave its CIAC Class LL state playoffs hopes a huge boost on Friday night when the No. 10 Gaels downed previously undefeated and No. 3 ranked West Haven, 38-28, at West Haven's Ken Strong Field. Jake Roberts scored three Shelton touchdowns. Jeff Carr led the offense with 100-plus rushing yards and a 41-yard TD reception. Nick Andrade was 5-for-5 on PATs and kicked a field goal. The Gaels defense forced three turnovers and held the Blue Devils to under a 100 yards by shutting them out in the second half. "We needed to make some adjustments in our defensive alignment for the second half because they were running all over us in the first half," said Shelton coach Jeff Roy. "Our defense came up big in the second half and our offense played consistent all game long." Roberts scored the go-ahead touchdown with 4:36 remaining in the fourth quarter, as the Gaels went up, 35-28. West Haven's Kyle Godrey rushed for 175 yards on 14 carries in the first half and gave his team a 28-21 halftime lead. He finished with three TDs. Roberts' two-yard touchdown run brought Shelton to within 28-27 in the third quarter. Jaryd Witkowski had a 60-yard touchdown run for Shelton in the first half on a fumble recovery return. With its sixth consecutive win, Shelton improved to 6-1 and moved into second place behind undefeated Darien (7-0) in the playoff standings.
