Gaelettes edge Oxford in summer finale

Tanya Adler stole the ball with the clock ticking under eight seconds and Shelton High defeated Oxford High, 26-25, in the season finale of the Stratford Girls High School Basketball League on Aug. 21.

With the game tied at 24 and Oxford running the clock down, Shelton’s Eliza Lewis stole a pass and went around a screen by Sara Bertola and buried a 12-footer from the right side.

The teams exchanged turnovers, before Oxford made one-of-two shots from the foul line to draw within a point with 10 seconds remaining.

Oxford stole the inbounds pass, but Adler snatched the ball right back and dribbled out the time remaining.

“We played great defense tonight,” Shelton coach David Bertola said. “The girls just want to play to get better and get practice in together before the season.”

Leading Shelton in the summer season-ender were seniors Lauren Miller, Lewis, Sara Bertola, juniors Brooke McCone, Erin Adler and Tanya Adler and sophomore Devin Spisto.

Lewis, who scored nine points, opened the game with a free throw and a corner jumper to stake Shelton to the lead.

Oxford tallied the next six points, but steals by McCone and Miller curtailed the run and Shelton tied the game when Erin Adler made a freebie and then scored in traffic off an assist from Lewis.

McCone, Tanya Adler and Miller stopped Oxford on its next two trips midway through the 20-minute first half, and Shelton took the lead when Erin Adler snuck inside for a putback basket.

Lewis split two defenders and made a tough runner in the lane to give Shelton a two-point lead at the seven-minute mark.

A baseline jumper and a bucket off a rebound put Oxford on top. Tanya Adler blocked a shot on the next possession, but a jumper completed a 6-0 Oxford run with time winding down in the first half.

McCone’s runner with 47 seconds left broke a five-minute scoring drought by Shelton and Oxford took a 14-12 lead into the half.

An Oxford 3-pointer and layup put Shelton behind by seven early in the second half.

McCone (seven points) dribbled around another Sara Bertola screen and got to the baseline for a bucket, before Tanya Adler attacked the basket for another hoop.

Spisto’s fourth defensive rebound led to a transition basket by Erin Adler (seven points), with Tanya Adler getting the assist.

McCone knocked down a long 3-pointer from above the foul line, and after another Spisto board, McCone was fouled and hit a free throw.

Shelton had turned a seven-point deficit into a 24-19 lead.

Oxford rallied back to tie things for the fifth time in the game, before Shelton stole its way to victory.
