Gaels lose second-half battle to Bears

The Shelton High boys basketball team lost a 78-66 decision to Norwalk High  in a first round Masuk Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament game at Dave Strong Gymnasium in Monroe on Dec. 27.

Norwalk, which features 6-9 Steve Enoch and 6-6 Roy Kane, began to use its size late in the first half. With the Gaels holding a 33-30 lead, the Bears scored the last four points of the half, all in the paint, to take a 34-33 lead into the intermission.

The run continued for the first four minutes of the third quarter. A conventional three-point play capped a 20-6 Norwalk run, giving the Bears the lead for good.

Shelton (1-2) outscored Norwalk 8-4 over the final four minutes of the third quarter to pull within 54-47.

Justin Lynch and Mike Davis each converted a steal into an easy basket at the other end, while Jeff Stochmal scored off an inbounds pass from Lynch and Patrick Murphy (20 points) converted a runner in the lane for the Gaels.

Shelton would get as close as five points, 60-55, on a Davis three-point play including a scoop lay-up. But after Norwalk scored on a driving lay-up, the Gaels missed a pair of free throws, and Norwalk scored four more points to push its lead back to double digits, 70-59, with 1:55 left.

Casey Belade (14 points) and Davis (13 points) joined Murphy in double-figures. Stochmal added seven points off the bench, while Matthew Brouilette and Federici each scored five points, and Lynch contributed two.

Shelto will play Masuk High in the consolation game on Monday at 5:15 p.m.
