Maloney, Shearer named SCC scholars
Timothy Maloney and Lauren Shearer of Shelton High were among the 14 student-athletes from seven high schools named The SportsCenter of Connecticut/Southern Connecticut Conference Scholar Athletes of the Month for January.
Now in its seventh year, The SportsCenter of Connecticut/SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month program will honor outstanding young men and women each month during the 2012-13 academic year.
“Many thanks to the Sports Center of Connecticut for its support of the SCC and the Scholar Athlete of the Month program,” said SCC Commissioner Al Carbone. “This conference has been proud of its success for the last 18-plus years, and to be able to recognize outstanding young men and women who demonstrate the desire and ability to succeed solidifies what the SCC is all about.”
Student athletes who are selected must be a varsity letterwinner and have a 3.0/B average, while demonstrating leadership qualities such as: being a positive role model; helping teammates overcome adversity; showing a commitment to self-improvement; or putting the needs of the team before themselves.
A captain of the Gaels’ boys swim team, Maloney has been an outstanding performer in the classroom.
He currently holds a 96.25 grade point average and is ranked 18th out of 386 in his graduating class. Maloney has also been named to the SCC All-Academic Team, an Advanced CAPT Scholar, and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Other extra-curricular activates that Maloney participates in include being a team manager of the Shelton girls swim team, Special Olympics swimming volunteer, member of the Bridgeport Aquaculture program, and technology and page editor for the Gael Winds Newspaper.
“Timmy is a quiet leader who leads by example, both in the pool and the classroom,” Shelton boys swim coach James Allan said. “He’s earned the respect of his teachers, classmates, and teammates.”
A two-sport standout (cheerleading, lacrosse) for the Gaels, Lauren Shearer has been a model student athlete.
Lauren currently holds an 89.90 grade point average and is involved in numerous after school activities. These include being Arts and Entertainment editor for the Gael Winds Newspaper, Senior Class Vice-President, member of the Spanish Club, Key Club, Student Council, Youth to Youth Group, SHS Unified Cheerleading Squad, and a volunteer at Griffin Hospital and Monroe Food Pantry.
Shearer has been recognized for her academic achievements by being named to the SCC All-Academic Team, SHS Student of the Month, AP Scholar, CAPT Scholar, and is a member of National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society.
“Lauren is an incredible young woman,” Shelton cheerleading coach Christine Oddo said. “She is a talented cheerleader, incredible student, and friend to everyone. Her involvement in activities both within the school and local community make her a perfect role model. I am proud to be associated with such a quality person.”
