O'Connor's free throw lifts Shelton past Guilford
Casey O’Connor made a pair of free throws with 35 seconds remaining and coach Mary Piccirillo’s Shelton High girls basketball team defeated Guilford High, 38-36, at the Vincent J. Murray Gymnasium on Friday night.
“Those were huge free throws from Casey, who is only a freshman,” Piccirillo said after her squad posted its first victory of the season. “Our defense played very well, created a lot of turnovers, and everyone stepped up.”
Of Shelton’s eight defeats, one came in overtime (Sacred Heart Academy), one by two points (Norwalk) and another by three (Hyde Leadership).
So when the Gaelettes were tied for the fourth time in the game at 36 on Pressley Altieri’s transition basket with 52 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, there was reason for Shelton to worry.
Guilford pressed the inbound play, but Brooke McCone saved a turnover at half court, and O’Connor was soon fouled.
She made both free throws and Guilford missed three shots down the stretch, including a running 3-pointer by Altieri from 40-feet out at the buzzer.
McCone scored 12 points for Shelton, followed by Nicole Roberts (eight), Jessica Wilm (five) and O’Connor (five).
Altieri scored 19 points to lead the Indians (3-6).
