Shelton-Amity (game story)

Mikaila Schmitt and Chloe Brinton combined to score 30 points, leading the Amity High girls basketball team past Shelton High, 39-24, on Friday in an SCC Housatonic Division matchup in Woodbridge.

Schmitt scored a game-high 16 points, adding seven rebounds and four steals. Brinton notched 14 points — including seven during a 13-0 run to start the second half that put the Spartans (7-1) ahead 31-12 midway through the third quarter.

Shelton’s Alyssa Eannotti and Jessica Wilm sandwiched layups around a fadeaway jumper by Schmitt, getting the Gaelettes within 33-16, before Brinton closed the quarter by converting a drive to the basket.

Amity scored just four points in the final frame, with Shelton netting eight, to put the final margin at 39-24 and extending the Spartans’ winning streak to six games.

Eannotti led coach Mary Piccirillo’s Gaelettes with eight points, while Wilm chipped in with six — all in the second half.

Amity held Shelton (3-5) without a field goal until the 4:35-mark of the second quarter, building up a 13-1 advantage it never relinquished.

Eannotti knocked down a free throw for Shelton’s lone point of the first quarter.

Schmitt, a 5-11 junior combo guard, give the Gaelettes fits in the opening frame. She converted a putback with 4:31 left in the period for the first points of game, before sinking a baseline jumper.

Following Eannotti’s foul shot at the 2:51 mark, Schmitt tossed in a layup, followed by a basket off of an offensive rebound by center Molly Ronan to make it 8-1 Amity after one quarter.

Putbacks by Schmitt and Isabella Bierezowiec and a free throw from Janae Graham pushed the Spartan advantage to 13-1 with 5:14 left in the first half.

Eannotti then buried a 3-pointer from the left wing on the ensuing Shelton possession, igniting a 10-3 Gaelette run.

Brinton answered Eannotti’s long-range jumper with a 3-pointer of her own, before Nicole Beard connected on a brace of free throws, Brooke McCone canned a three and Colleen Flood scored on a drive to narrow Shelton’s gap to 16-11.

That led to an Amity timeout and Beard then hit the back end of a two-shot foul to make it 16-12 with 1:21 remaining.

But, Amity forward Kristin Post closed the half with a layup, sparking a 15-0 run that stretched into the third quarter and didn’t end until Eannotti’s basket off of an inbounds’ play with three minutes left in the period.

Shelton outscored Amity, 12-8, over the final 11 minutes, but the damage was already done.

The Gaelettes faced Daniel Hand (5-3) last night at Polson Gymnasium and host Wilbur Cross (0-8) of New Haven on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Murray Gymnasium.
