Shelton defeats West Haven, makes state playoffs

Shelton High improved its record to 10-0 and guaranteed itself a spot in the Class LL state playoffs with a 38-28 victory over SCC football rival West Haven at Edward Finn Stadium on Friday night.

Coach Jeff Roy’s Gaels fought off the Blue Devils (5-5) to earn the SCC Division I West title behind Mark Piccirillo, who ran for two touchdowns and threw for two scores.

Shelton took a 14-6 lead after one quarter on Piccirillo’s 2-yard run, a 20-yard reception by Alex Kirk, and the first of Joe Zoppi’s five conversion kicks.

West Haven stayed within range and trailed 24-20 at the half. Peter Hoff scored from 13 yards out and Zoppi made a 27-yard field goal for the Gaels in the second quarter.

Piccirillo’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Hoff in the third quarter upped Shelton’s lead to 31-20, before the Westies closed within 31-28 with one period remaining to be played.

Piccirillo’s 1-yard run closed out the scoring.
