NABF: Milford Hunters blank Milford Monsters in opener
Dave Otero’s complete-game shutout powered the Milford Hunters to a 6-0 win over the Milford Monsters in the NABF Northeast Regional Pool B opener at Brinley Field in Orange on Thursday morning.
Otero, a left-hander, struck out seven and allowed just two hits — singles to Buddy Hine and Nick Campos. Otero did not allow a hit after the second inning, as the Hunters, playing out of the Bridgeport Senior City League, broke the game open with three runs in the sixth.
With the bases loaded, Kyle Horton drove a long fly to the left-center field gap that caromed off Tommy Roy’s glove.
That allowed Anthony Amoroso and Nick Vorvis, who drew walks, and Tyler Graziano, who reached on a fielder’s choice, to score.
Amoroso also scored the Hunters’ first run, lacing a double off of Monster starter Levi Edelman to start the second.
After Joe Rohrig was hit by a pitch, J.J. Montello doubled in Amoroso. Edeleman struck out Graziano, but Vorvis doubled the Hunters’ lead with a bloop single to shallow right.
Monster right-fielder C.J. Romanos cut down Montello attempting to score, and Campos, the catcher, threw down to second base to nab Vorvis looking to advance.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Hunters added another marker.
Joey Porricelli was hit by a pitch with one out, then scored on Ron Williams’ RBI single to left field.
The Hunters managed just five hits off of Edelman, but made them all count.
The Monsters, representing the CT Adult Baseball Association, took on the Thermaxx Jackets at 2 p.m. in a Pool B matchup at Piurek Field.
On Friday, the Hunters face Thermaxx at Piurek Field at 10 a.m. The top two teams in Pool B will then meet at 2 p.m. at Piurek, with spots in Saturday’s semifinals on the line.
