The UConn men's basketball team begins its Big East season a week from Saturday at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse against Butler. But first, the fifth-ranked, 10-0 Huskies have one more non-conference to play.

Long Island University comes to town on Saturday and ... well, the Sharks aren't very good. Coached by former NBA standnout Rod Strickland, LIU is 1-7 — but really 0-7, since its one win came against Mount Saint Vincent, a Division 3 program.

Credit Strickland for scheduling tough. The Sharks have lost at Utah and at another pair of Big East programs: Marquette (95-58) and St. John's (95-68). The Sharks are coming off a 20-point loss to UMass-Lowell, which then beat UMass Thursday night.

The Huskies need to keep their eyes on the prize and not overlook any opponent. Even a non-blowout victory could affect their NET ranking (which is currently No. 2, behind only Houston). Still, this game should merely be a tune-up for the Huskies. Expect more playing time from guys like Joey Calcaterra, Hassan Diarra, even Richie Springs.
