AYF Vikings claim Colonial League title
The seventh-grade AYF Vikings won the Colonial League championship, ending the season with a perfect 9-0 record after a 30-20 win over Monroe in the title game.
The Vikings opening drive was three plays for three yards and then a punt.
Monroe marched 53 yards down to the 4-yard line and on first-and goal, Jake Breton caused a fumble recovered by Brian Berrito at the 2.
The Vikings then went on a eight-play, 98-yard drive to grab an 8-0 lead.
On the drive, the Vikings converted two third-and-long situations and a fourth-and-11 to keep the chains moving.
Paul Ferrigno had two receptions on the drive, totaling 74 yards, and Berrito capped it off with a 4-yard touchdown run. On the ensuing drive, Nick Andrade intercepted the ball and the Vikings needed only two plays to score.
David Yacowitz then hauled in a 28-yard touchdown reception to give the Vikings a 16-0 lead in the first quarter.
Monroe would then drive down to the Viking 22, and on fourth-and-7, Jack Carr sacked the quarterback to end the drive.
The Vikings then went on a 13-play drive that ended with a 3-yard touchdown run by Berrito on fourth down with 24 seconds remaining in the half.
Shelton, up 22-0, kicked off to Monroe to start the third quarter. Monroe drove seven plays and 62 yards for the touchdown.
Jack Carr blocked the extra point and the score was 22-6. The Vikings then went three-and-out and punted the ball back to Monroe.
Monroe scored on a five-play drive to make it 22-14 at the end of the third quarter. The Vikings responded with a 17-play, 74-yard drive that ended with a Berrito 14-yard touchdown run.
With 3:24 remaining in the game, Monroe went six plays and scored to make it 30-20. The extra point was again blocked by Carr.
The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Berrito, and the Vikings took a knee three times to run out the clock and win the championship.
Andrade went 3-for-4 on PATs and added three tackles and a interception. Carr had five tackles and a sack, Breton had four tackles and a forced fumble, Berrito added six tackles and a fumble recovery and Colin Mengold notched six tackles and a fumble recovery for the Vikings’ defense.
Berrito had 22 carries for 86 yards and three touchdowns, behind the blocking of Colin Saint Pierre, Jake Delima, David Youngquist, Sam Chalk, Jake Ferrigno, Sean Rago, Carr, Ray Wiener and Breton.
Quarterback Jake Roberts was 11-for-13 passing for 152 yards and a touchdown.
