Pop Warner names directors

Shelton Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading has named football and spirit directors for the 2013 season.

Justin Stanko will return as football director while Chris Boyce, assistant cheer director last year, will be spirit director. The vice presidents offer their recommendations to the president, but directors must ultimately be approved by the 25-member board of directors. Both Stanko and Boyce were voted in unanimously at the January meeting.

“Pop Warner continues to follow though on its promise of a new era with a change at Cheer Director in Chris Boyce, while we continue to implement our long term football strategy that Justin began to practice over the last two seasons,” said Mike Boyce, president of Shelton Pop Warner.

“The directors will be announcing their coaching staffs very soon.”

Stanko has been a Shelton Pop Warner head coach since 2009. He has coached a Mitey Mite football team for the last two years, and last year the team won the Mitey Mite Bowl. A two-time All-State football player at Bunnell High School, he received a UConn football full-scholarship where he was a three-year letterman. In 2005, Stanko graduated from Quinnipiac School of Law.

A father of three, he is a lieutenant/operations commander for the Derby Police, and an attorney with Berchem, Moses & Devlin, P.C.

Boyce is a lifelong resident of Shelton and a working mother of two.

She was a Shelton Pop Warner cheerleader and a member of the S.C.P.W. championship squad, alongside Grace Searles (the late president who is the inspiration for Gracie Field).

During her years at Shelton High School, Boyce was one of the tri-captains of the Pom Pom Dance squad and a member of the gymnastic team.

In 2012, she was head coach of the Pee Wee Cheerleaders who advanced to the Pop Warner National Cheerleading Championships in Disney.

Anyone interested in being a coach or student demonstrator for football, cheerleading or dance may email Stanko at jstanko5088@gmail.com or Boyce at vikingcheer@att.net.

Registration for the 2013 season is already underway.
