Rapids compete at Eastern championship
Five local area swimmers from the Shelton-Monroe Rapids swim team qualified to compete at the Eastern Zone Age Group Championships that were held recently at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center in Richmond, Virginia.
Simona Visinski, Reid Chavez and Megan Duffy, of Shelton, and Gracie Gustinis and Kanu Caplash, of Monroe, qualified to represent the Connecticut Zone Team.
Medals were awarded to the top 8 finishers at the meet.
Visinski placed fifth in the 50 and 100 freestyle events.
Duffy won an eighth place medal in the 400 freestyle, while Gustinis placed fifth in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 backstroke.
The Connecticut Zone team placed sixth overall.
In order to qualify to participate in Eastern Zones, swimmers must achieve a difficult qualifying time standard.
The Connecticut Zone Team was comprised of 97 top swimmers from throughout the state.
The Connecticut Zone team competed against other highly-competitive swimmers from Maine to Virginia.
The Eastern Zone championship is the most competitive meet for an age group athlete on the East Coast.
