The seventh-grade Shelton AYF Vikings are 2-0 after a 38-12 win over Newtown.

After a long kick return and two penalties, the Vikings were down 6-0 early in the first quarter.

Shelton then used a seven-play drive with a 36-yard touchdown run by Paul Ferrigno. The kick by Nick Andrade was good to make the score 8-6.

The Vikings’ defense was led by Colin Mengold with four tackles and two assists, Jake Falanga with six tackles and one assist, Jake Breton three tackles, one assist, one sack and one fumble recovery.

Jake Delima and Jack Carr added three tackles apiece.

Brian Berrito, Colin St. Pierre and Paul Ferrigno combined for 197 yards rushing. Andrade was 4-for-4 kicking extra points.

David Yakowitz scored a touchdown on a 5-yard fumble recovery. Nick Pavone scored on a 49-yard pass play and the Vikings led 38-6.

Newtown scored a late touchdown to put the final at 38-12.

Key players in the win over Newtown were Tyler Janik, Jake Ferrigno, Connor Greene, Sam Chalk and David Youngquist. The Vikings will be away at Oxford on Sept. 22, at 2 p.m.
